We are gearing up for a big weekend in Northeast Oregon! Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial opening of the tourism season in our neck of the woods and we are excited to welcome you to explore and enjoy all that the beautiful area has to offer. We encourage you to slow down, relax and unwind!

Here are some of the activities you can enjoy in Byway Country:

Friday, May 27th: Terminal Gravity presents live music and award-winning brews: Karyn Ann, 7 p.m., 803 School St., Enterprise

Saturday, May 28th: Farmers’ Market in La Grande at Fourth and Adams, downtown, 9 to noon, with music, crafts and produce. Wallowa County Farmers Market Spring Planting Festival, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Joseph & Main St., Joseph. Kick off the farmers’ market season with fresh produce, plant starts for your garden, There will be music.

Eagle Cap Excursion Train / Two Rivers Bonus, departs at 10 a.m. for the Elgin Depot. There is still time to reserve your seats on this Memorial Weekend train ride. The train follows the Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers as they tumble their courses and join together at Rondowa, then continues up the Wallowa River. Our Two Rivers ride is our standard trip, and the scenery is fantastic! This bonus trip takes you further and lets you enjoy more scenery than our standard ride. Travel from Elgin to Minam and back to Elgin. Lunch and a special end-of-the-trip treat are included. Traveling a total of 53 miles, round trip, the ride departs from Elgin Depot at 10 a.m. and returns at about 3:30 p.m. Call Alegre Travel for tickets, 800.323.7330.

Joseph Branch Railriders launched their season on Thursday and offer two routes. Go to the website for information and schedule.

The Wallowa Lake Tramway opens this weekend, providing the easy way to the top of the mountain, where you will find stunning views, incredible photo opportunities and great food and beverages.

Living history at NHOTIC

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center near Baker City has fun activities planned for the weekend. The Center is offering two days of special programs featuring historic re-enactors and demonstrations of frontier life on Memorial Day Weekend! Saturday and Sunday May 28 and 29, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day, interpreters will demonstrate skills such as quilting, black powder shooting, wheelwright, and dutch oven cooking. Visitors can participate in making their own pioneer craft such as beeswax candles or rag dolls. Roving interpreters with authentic outfits will portray frontier characters. Vali’s Alpine Restaurant at Wallowa Lake Villiage will have Doughnuts this weekend. We are opening Saturday and Sundays. We begin our famous doughnuts Memorial Day weekend, May 28-29. Hope to see you soon.

The wonderful and historical Wallowa Lake Lodge Is now serving breakfast daily 7:30 – 11:00 a.m., in one of the prettiest settings anywhere.

Glacier Grill at Wallowa Lake is now open for the summer, 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Great food, handy groceries and a good place to meet and visit residents and visitors alike.

The Clubhouse Cafe at Alpine Meadows Golf Course is open daily 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., 66098 Golf Course Road, Enterprise. Come check out the new menu at the cafe. Sherri Curry will be cooking up some of her beef briskets and pulled pork to round out the menu. We are breaking out the grill and the fryer this year, so those hand-formed hamburgers will be flame broiled and ready to eat and every Friday we will feature smoked baby back ribs. The cafe is open to the public, so even if you’re not a golfer come and check us out.

Hells Canyon Adventures offers jet boat, rafting, and fishing adventures at the South entrance of Hells Canyon. This is an amazing way to experience the majesty of the canyon. All tours operate on Pacific Time. Here is the schedule for the weekend and coming week:
